Cybersecurity in Agrifood: Protecting Digital Agriculture and Food Systems

Purpose & Scope

  • Presentation of cybersecurity fundamentals and advanced protection strategies specifically tailored for the agrifood sector. The training covers threat landscape analysis, vulnerability assessment, security architecture for IoT devices, data protection, and incident response procedures. Participants will gain understanding of how to secure precision agriculture systems, automated food processing lines, and digital supply chain infrastructure.
  • The training includes an overview of common cyber threats in agriculture (ransomware, IoT attacks, supply chain vulnerabilities), security frameworks and standards (ISO 27001, NIS2 Directive, GDPR implications), and practical implementation strategies. Special attention is given to securing connected farm equipment, sensor networks, drone systems, and cloud-based farm management platforms.
  • A selection of services and resources available through agrifoodTEF nodes to support cybersecurity implementation will also be presented, including security testing infrastructure, penetration testing services, security audits, and access to cybersecurity experts across the consortium.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the specific cybersecurity threats facing the agrifood sector and their potential impact on operations.
  • Identify vulnerabilities in digital agriculture systems, IoT devices, and food processing infrastructure.
  • Recognise best practices for securing smart farming technologies and protecting agricultural data.
  • Have a good understanding of how agrifoodTEF testing infrastructure can support cybersecurity assessment and improvement.
  • Learn about relevant regulatory requirements (NIS2, GDPR, sector-specific standards).

Learning outcomes

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Conduct basic security assessments of their digital agriculture and food processing systems.
  • Explain to SMEs and stakeholders what cybersecurity measures are essential for their operations.
  • Implement fundamental security controls for IoT devices, farm management systems, and data storage.
  • Develop incident response plans specific to agrifood operations.
  • Get points of contact with relevant cybersecurity partners within the agrifoodTEF consortium for advanced testing and consultation.
  • Understand how to integrate security-by-design principles in new digital agriculture projects.
  • Navigate compliance requirements for critical infrastructure and food safety systems.
