Precision agriculture: Technologies for smarter crop management

language Dutch English

An on-demand introduction to precision agriculture tools and methods, helping participants understand how data-driven technologies improve crop monitoring and input optimisation.

Purpose & Scope

This on-demand training provides a clear and practical introduction to precision agriculture, focusing on how sensing technologies, data interpretation and targeted interventions help optimise crop production.

It explains key components such as sensors, GPS systems, yield mapping and decision-support tools, along with real examples from the field.

The training guides participants through the full sensing, interpretation, action, and evaluation cycle that forms the backbone of precision agriculture. Through concrete examples from Flanders, it illustrates how satellite, drone and ground-based sensors monitor soil and crop conditions, and how digital tools can turn this information into variable-rate fertilisation, pesticide application and irrigation.

Participants gain an understanding of how these data-driven approaches contribute to sustainability, resource efficiency and improved farm performance.

Learning objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the concept and benefits of precision agriculture.
  • Identify sensor types and platforms suited to different crop management needs.
  • Understand the Sensing–Interpretation–Action–Evaluation cycle.
  • Analyse examples of spatial variability and their practical implications.

Learning outcomes

Participants completing this training will be able to:

  • Describe how precision agriculture supports sustainable and efficient crop production.
  • Select appropriate sensing tools for specific monitoring objectives.
  • Interpret spatial data to support targeted interventions.
  • Apply basic principles of variable-rate management based on real-world examples.

Who should attend?

This training is designed for agronomists, agricultural advisors, technology service providers, and professionals interested in adopting data-driven tools for improved crop management across arable farming, horticulture and tree crops.
