The service provides a comprehensive assessment of the connectivity of agricultural equipment, such as sensors and actuators, through private networks. By offering in-depth visibility into the network’s operation, it enables accurate troubleshooting, ensuring optimal connectivity for these kinds of devices. The service can handle the connection of multiple devices, making it suitable for validating the development of custom connectivity modules or testing agricultural equipment with built-in commercial modules. This allows for early detection of connectivity issues, fine-tuning module and network configurations, and ensuring smooth equipment operation. By deploying private networks, it is possible to implement configurations that simulate adverse conditions in deployment, such as successive outages, excessive packet loss, remote access failures to access the hardware, and more; practices that would be unthinkable in public networks. Furthermore, although the preference is for the deployment of cellular networks like 5G, 4G, or 3G, other communication technologies could be supported, like NB-IoT.

The tests in this service are aimed at products that run complex apps (based on a multitude of microservices, including heavy AI algorithms) in the fields, with limited to no connectivity to the cloud. In these cases, we propose a benchmarking designed to understand what the bottlenecks are in the implemented solution architecture to help TEF customers improve the efficiency and reliability of such products/solutions. The service may also encompass virtual facility elements (enriched datasets, virtual machines hosting containerised modules) blended with physical sensors and infrastructure in our test field or directly installed at the client's premises if need be for the duration of the experimentation.

This not only makes data collection easy but also reduces human interference, hence reducing the chances of error, thus making the information obtained more valid. After the operation, the data is processed and tidied up to enable further analysis. In that respect, it can deliver faster and more accurate results for the customer, well-treated datasets according to each customer's needs, and at standards that can be further used in artificial intelligence models. Demonstrating how these advanced sensors can be integrated into safety functions is challenging, as it involves considering not only traditional functional safety aspects but also emerging factors like AI and Safety of the Intended Functionality (SOTIF).

Support includes performing comprehensive risk assessments, identifying relevant safety functions, and establishing high-level safety requirements for each. Depending on the project's focus, further guidance can be provided to ensure the selected safety concept aligns with applicable functional safety standards.

As part of this service, we test and measure, among other things, mechanical, physical, acoustic, radio, electromagnetic compatibility and electrical parameters for the purpose of assessing the overall user safety of agricultural, horticultural, forestry and food machinery, equipment and components. Verification is based on the requirements of standards and directives declared by the manufacturer. We carry out an initial assessment based on the design documentation provided or/and on measurements taken on a prototype based on harmonised and non-harmonised standards with relevant EU and sectoral legislation. This is to ensure that for instance essential requirements coming from for instance New Legislative Framework directives and other EU law are fulfilled to better protect both consumers and professionals from unsafe products to be placed on the European internal market. One of the aims is to help manufacturers in legal placing agrifood products on EU single market and in CE-marking process. The results obtained can be used in the further process of product labelling, declaration of conformity to affix the CE mark to the device within the scope of EMC, LVD, RED, MD, MR on other NLF directives and regulations.

What are the ethical, legal, and social aspects (ELSA) of AI-driven technology in agri-food? Mitigation of potential risks and finding opportunities are easier by identifying ELSA aspects in early development stages, when the technology is still in the making. Examples of ELSA aspects are autonomy, transparency, and bias, but also data privacy and other legal aspects. How does your AI technology deal with ELSA aspects? A combined survey and interview help AI developers to identify opportunities and issues with ELSA in the agri-food context from the perspective of end users and more broadly, for society. For example, to better align with the sustainability objectives of the AI-driven technology. The outcomes of the ELSA scan are a list of identified key ELSA aspects and high-level recommendations to further improve the AI technology.

Tests are conducted under controlled laboratory conditions, ensuring optimal reproducibility and repeatability, providing reliable insights into the system's efficiency and safety-critical functionalities. Typical assessments may cover the energy efficiency of SLAM, various types of end effectors, and other relevant components such as sensors, motors or AI software.
