In order to develop digital twins for agriculture, reliable long-term datasets on the agronomy and ecology of fields are crucial. From several long-term experiments and agricultural systems (like the Farm of the Future), datasets of fields are available with registrations of crop operations, crop measurements (e.g., timeseries of vegetation indices), yield, soil, & weather data, and data on key performance indicators. In some cases, other sensor data (tractor data, soil moisture, insect monitoring) are also available. New datasets can be developed based on specific needs.

Thanks to 30 years of data gathering at Agro-innovation Centre De Marke, multiple data sets are available. During these years, data is gathered on individual cow events, barn emissions, yields of specific and typical livestock farm crops, soil samples were taken, and feeding strategies were developed. Due to the systematic approach of De Marke, this data can be easily reused for setting up specific validation of AI algorithms. Additionally, new data can be gathered as requested.

The service validates that the tested solution performs as expected by the vendor or manufacturer. The objective is to detect potential mistakes in the sensor readings, the processing of the signal gathered by the sensor or in the intelligent component deriving the final information to be provided to the user to optimize livestock farming . The test can be performed at sensor or application level. The tests and validation can be performed in a laboratory or in an experimental pig farm equipped with automatic and manual measures of different variables (feed, water, CO2, NH3, temperature, ventilation, liveweight, etc.)

Testing of biomass and yield estimation

Our testing service assesses the accuracy of your system's biomass estimation capabilities. You can opt to evaluate your model virtually using existing datasets, such as satellite or image data, or we can gather new field data with our field sampling equipment specifically for your needs. The main targeted crops of the biomass estimation are grassland as well as clover and alfalfa, but also grain crops are possible. As yield and biomass are highly correlated in grassland, both can be determined with this test. We provide results using metrics like Pearson correlation/R-squared and MSE/MAE to give you a clear picture of your model's performance.

Testing of edge intelligence and IoT architectures

Testing of AI and robotics solutions leveraging edge computing and communication protocols in the IoT cloud-edge continuum. Can be a digital test (run on virtualised machines) or a physical test deployed either at the customer's premises or using the wide coverage wireless network installed in Trento valleys (Val d'Adige and Val di Non) for fruit crops (including but not limited to apples and grapes). FBK can support test design, proposing a benchmarking architecture to stress and monitor key components, helping to understand bottlenecks, allowing for better performance, lower bandwidth use, more reliability, and lower operating costs of tested solutions.

Testing of plant detection

Our digital test helps you evaluate how well your model identifies different types of plants. Your model can be delivered in a docker container or the inference results are collected in real time from your device in the field. We focus on key performance metrics like accuracy, precision, recall, Intersection over Union (IoU), and F1 score to give you a clear picture of your model's effectiveness. Crucial to this process is the ground truth data, which can be either specially prepared for this test or sourced from an existing benchmark dataset.

The service is intended to provide the client with technological and intellectual support for the improvement of plant health assessment tools for high-value crops. Support will be provided through testing of optical technology solutions, image analysis pipelines, and AI systems. The proposed testing and analysis will provide a wealth of feedback on the relevant tools and the quality and utility of the crop health data they collect. It may lead to changes in components, tools, and the choice of software and algorithms and general suggestions to ensure safe and effective work with sensitive crops.

Agriculture is a local and specific business, where localisation of solutions is required, especially when it comes to language and interfacing with users. Albeit the diffusion of multilingual generative AI technologies (or large language models, e.g., GPT), these models are not optimised for a specific industry. We can test the performance of multilingual AI solutions in agriculture, highlighting bottlenecks that limit them. This allows for optimised localisation of solutions and quicker achievement of scalability at the European level.
