Test, validation, and data collection of robotic and AI systems in circular dairy farming

Overview

At Agro-Innovation Centre De Marke, part of Wageningen University & Research, we test and validate robotic and AI solutions for dairy farming in a real and scientifically monitored farm environment. This unique setting allows us to evaluate technologies not only on technical performance but also on how they interact with the complete circular dairy system from cow behaviour and feed use to manure quality, soil fertility and nutrient cycling.

During testing, we collect accurate datasets that reflect real-farm conditions. These datasets can be compared to ground-truth measurements available at De Marke, ensuring reliable validation. This helps companies understand how well their systems perform, how they contribute to circular farming practices, and what improvements are needed before market introduction.

By combining practical farm operations with scientific expertise, we provide a credible and independent testing environment that accelerates innovation while supporting sustainable, circular dairy production.

More about the service

How can the service help you?

This service provides an objective, science-based assessment of your technology’s added value in real farm conditions. Before the service: (1) You have a robotic or AI solution but lack independent validation. (2) You are unsure how your system performs in a circular dairy setting. (3) You have limited insight into accuracy, reliability, usability or environmental impact. After the service: (1) You receive a WUR-approved validation report following agrifoodTEF protocols. (2) You get independent performance insights (e.g., accuracy, capacity, energy use, stability). (3) You learn how your technology interacts with the whole circular system — cow performance, manure characteristics, soil impact and nutrient flows. (4) You gain clarity on user acceptance (ease of use, workload reduction, perceived value). This supports product optimisation, market readiness and investment decisions.

How the service will be delivered

Delivered at: Agro-Innovation Centre De Marke (Hengelo Gld., The Netherlands) Carried out by: Wageningen Research specialists in dairy farming, sensing, robotics and circular systems Service steps: (1) Intake meeting to define objectives and testing scope. (2) Development of a customised test and data collection protocol. (3) Physical testing on the farm, including repeated cycles when needed. (4) Data collection and comparison with ground-truth measurements. (5) Analysis according to agrifoodTEF validation criteria. (6) Delivery of a WUR-approved final report. (7) Optional delivery of collected datasets. Customer provides: prototype/system, technical documentation, (software) access, and installation support Availability: year-round; seasonal constraints only apply to tests requiring specific crop or grazing conditions

Service customisation

The service is fully customisable based on the type of robotic or AI solution, the target market, and the customer’s geographical context. Testing can range from short validation cycles to extensive multi-season trials. Limitations only apply when solutions fall outside the expertise, facilities or datasets available at the De Marke circular dairy system.
