Overview

AgroWizard, a Dutch AgTech startup, is reshaping horticulture with AI-powered computer vision that automates stem measurement and tree mapping. Tested at Boomkwekerij Udenhout, the system measures up to 10,000 trees per hour, far beyond manual methods. AgroWizard collaborated with the agrifoodTEF Dutch Node, through Wageningen University & Research (WUR), to assess the ethical, legal, and societal aspects (ELSA) of AI adoption, ensuring the technology’s responsible and scalable deployment across the horticulture sector.

About the customer’s need

Tree growers rely on manual stem measurements that are slow, costly, and error-prone. Accurate, real-time data is essential for optimising growth, quality control, and sales, yet most enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems cannot easily integrate new sensor data. Rising labour costs and the need for efficiency and traceability pushed growers to seek an automated, AI-based solution capable of delivering precision at scale.

About the service

AgroWizard’s solution merges computer vision, edge computing, and a data visualisation platform to automatically capture and process tree measurements. Images are analysed locally and translated into numerical data, reducing transfer costs and safeguarding privacy.

agrifoodTEF, through Wageningen University & Research (WUR), provided an ELSA Scan, combining surveys, interviews, and a stakeholder workshop with 25 participants from industry, policy, and research. This support helped AgroWizard identify potential risks and opportunities, laying the groundwork for responsible and ethical AI adoption.

Impact

The adoption of AgroWizard’s solution has transformed efficiency and precision in tree nurseries. By automating measurements, growers can now process up to 10,000 trees per hour, drastically reducing labour costs and minimising human error. The improved accuracy enables more informed decisions on growth and quality, while localised data processing cuts transfer costs and enhances data security. Beyond operational gains, the ELSA Scan fostered collaboration among growers, policymakers, and researchers, opening discussions on governance and data ownership.

Overall, AgroWizard’s partnership with agrifoodTEF has set the foundation for sustainable, ethically guided AI integration and paves the way for scaling this innovation across the broader horticulture sector.
