This webinar explores the principles of performance evaluation for AI and robotic systems in agriculture, combining methodological insights with practical examples of evaluation services in viticulture and field crops.

Performance evaluation in agriculture

Purpose & Scope

This webinar introduces the concept of performance evaluation and explains why it is essential for developing and deploying reliable AI and robotic solutions in agriculture. It will first explore what performance means, how it can be measured, and why evaluation is important to ensure that a technology meets its intended objectives and works under real-world conditions.

The webinar will then present different approaches to performance evaluation. First we will focus on AI performance, including how to assess the quality and reliability of AI systems. Then we will address performance evaluation for robotics and drones and we will present its ARPA approach. Finally, practical examples will show how performance evaluation can be applied to agricultural technologies in viticulture and field crops.

Through these contributions, participants will gain a clearer understanding of the methods, tools and services available to assess agricultural AI and robotics solutions. The webinar will help stakeholders better understand how performance evaluation can support technology development, adoption and trust in agricultural innovation.

During the event, attendees gain experience on:

●    DigComp 2.2 – Information and data literacy: Understanding data quality and its impact on AI performance.
●    DigComp 2.2 – Problem solving: Identifying appropriate methods to assess AI and robotic solutions in real-world agricultural contexts.
●    AI4EU – Basic AI understanding: Understanding AI capabilities, limitations and performance evaluation principles.
●    AI literacy: Recognising the importance of testing, validation, reliability and robustness when assessing AI-based agricultural technologies.

Learning objectives

●    Define the key concepts of performance evaluation and identify at least three criteria used to assess AI and robotic systems in agriculture.
●    Describe the main approaches to performance evaluation for AI systems, robotics and drones, and the ARPA approach.
●    Identify at least two practical applications of performance evaluation in agriculture, based on examples from viticulture and field crops.
●    Recognise how performance evaluation services can help assess agricultural technologies under real-world conditions and support informed decisions about their development and adoption.

Learning outcomes

●    Explain the main principles of performance evaluation and distinguish between different dimensions of performance for AI and robotic systems.
●    Identify key methods and criteria used to evaluate AI systems, robots and drones in agricultural applications.
●    Identify potential needs for performance evaluation when supporting the development, testing or adoption of AI and robotic solutions in agriculture.
